The AI Productivity Paradox: When Faster Work Doesn't Mean Easier Work
I’ve been having some remarkable success using AI to build tools that help me work smarter in data engineering. Just recently, I created a CLI tool using ADBC (Arrow Database Connectivity) written in Go—something I never would have attempted before because I don’t know Go. But AI made it possible, and the result solves an annoying problem with a clean, minimal code footprint.
While I don’t believe it’s realistic or wise to replace entire SaaS platforms with AI-generated solutions, having this capability to build targeted tools has been transformative for certain aspects of my workflow. It’s like having a super-powered assistant that can handle the grunt work while I focus on the strategic elements.
But here’s where things get complicated. The productivity gains we’re experiencing with AI come with unexpected consequences. Many of us are finding that instead of creating breathing room, AI is becoming the justification for increased workloads and reduced headcount.
I’ve heard from colleagues across the industry who’ve experienced this firsthand. Teams that were once seven people strong are now down to four, handling double the workload. The temporary relief AI provided was quickly replaced by management seeing an opportunity to “optimize” resources rather than reinvest in innovation.
This creates what I call the AI productivity paradox: we’re getting more done, but we’re not necessarily benefiting from those gains. Instead of using that extra capacity for learning, innovation, or work-life balance, we’re just doing more of the same work faster.
From a data architecture perspective, AI has been particularly valuable for documentation, debugging, and exploring new technologies. It’s excellent at comparing tools, pulling best practices from documentation, and helping with architectural decisions. But when it comes to complex business logic implementation or end-to-end data pipelines, human expertise still reigns supreme.
The key, I’ve found, is treating AI like a talented but inexperienced intern. It can handle the repetitive tasks, generate initial drafts, and help with research, but it needs careful supervision and validation. The worst outcomes occur when teams outsource their critical thinking entirely and just accept whatever slop the AI produces.
There’s also the concern about what this means for junior data engineers and architects entering the field. The traditional learning path—struggling with problems, debugging failures, and gradually building understanding—is being shortcut. Without that foundational struggle, how will the next generation develop the deep understanding needed for complex data systems?
Despite these challenges, I remain optimistic about AI’s role in data engineering. It’s particularly powerful for:
Building utility tools and scripts
Documentation and knowledge gathering
Debugging and troubleshooting
Exploring new technologies and architectures
Dashboard and visualization development
The real opportunity lies in using AI to elevate our work rather than replace our thinking. By automating the repetitive aspects, we can focus more on the strategic, creative elements that truly drive value—designing robust data architectures, solving complex business problems, and innovating with new approaches.
